Braid
Braid is a general purpose application for managing business data as lists of related
items. It can be used to replace Microsoft Access style applications where scaling
for enterprise wide use is required and user access via a browser is a benefit.
It is also used as a framework to build new applications.
Developing new applications can be done rapidly and implemented into production
within days. It is ideally used as a RAD toolset for building core business applications
with all the security and data reliability of a full scale development.
Braid is particularly useful where the data can be structured as lists of items
and details about those items. For example, as an account manager you want to keep
a list of customers with whom you deal. Each customer has a list of general information
such as name, address, telephone number and the like. Each customer also has a list
of people you deal with. Each person has a name, a role and contact details.
Braid provides a simple interface that allows lists like these to be selected, sorted,
filtered, displayed and updated. For example you might want to select all projects
you are involved with at a particular customer. Once you have the list of projects
you might want to select one project and obtain a list of equipment that is being
used by that project. All details about an individual item of equipment in a list
can be displayed and maintained.
Braid is deployed in a server environment; it is developed in Microsoft .Net and
uses SQL Server as a database.
xWebDocs
XWebDocs is an application for creating and managing templated documents. It provides
web-based content creation using wizard style web pages, and processes the content
through ‘engines’ to deliver required business outcomes.
In its basic form it allows a user to enter content into a simple form, using next/previous
buttons to navigate the form, and once collected, merging the content into a Word
template document similar to a mail-merge process.
XWebDocs is a server based process and therefore provides all the security and reliability
features inherent in a server environment. All content, templates, business rules,
applications are stored on the server and therefore protected by server security.
All processes execute on the server so deployment and client PC configuration issues
are minimized. Content is gathered on the server and is maintained and archived
so that it is available anytime for any authorised user to reuse or review as business
needs dictate.
A single piece of content generated as a WebDoc can be used for multiple purposes.
For example it could be used to construct a Word document from a template and then
be used to automatically update an enterprise database.
The key concept of XWebDocs is the WebDoc. This is a specially constructed web page
that manages the process of collecting and editing content. Each WebDoc is specific
to a piece of content even though the content can be used for multiple purposes.
Examples of a WebDoc might be: Leave requisition, Expenses claim, Capital Expenditure
proposal, New Client Registration, etc.
XWebDocs supports a concept of workflow where a WebDoc instance can move through
a predefined set of process steps in an ordered and managed manner. For example,
an instance of a Leave Form could be created by an employee, forwarded to a manager
for authorisation, and then forwarded to HR for action. A process step can be actioned
by a person or by a system component. The typical system component is a Word formatting
engine that merges the content with a template, and then forwards the resultant
document to a person using email.
A WebDoc is built as a set of simple panels within a web page. The panels consist
of content entry fields and explanatory/guidance text. The panels can be built with
a simple text editor or a web designer tool such as Visual Studio. The content entry
fields are defined using the Xml based syntax defined for Microsoft’s ASP dot NET.
All content is stored as Xml documents and Xml and XSLT are significant contributors
to the simplicity and elegance of the system.
