Strata - a next generation Student management System for Education Institutions

Strata is a new product directed at the administration business functions of tertiary
education institutions in the business of delivering vocational, graduate and post-graduate
education. It provides functionality, flexibility, performance and reliability unmatched
by any other product available in Australia today!
Strata is designed to support multiple campuses and perform efficiently across limited
capacity network infrastructure. Strata features both configurable functional and
data access control, including record-level access control (e.g. restrict access
to student performance to members of a department). Strata is fully auditable; details
of persistent user actions are recorded, for example the updating of the definition
of a course.
Strata provides full support for the business processes of –

- Development of curriculum, and the organisation of courses and classes;
- Student enrolment, and the calculation and collection of student fees;
- Management of course delivery, student attendance and performance recording and
reporting, and graduation;
- Online access for students, employers and associated government bodies;
- Statistical analysis and reporting, and statutory and regulatory reporting.
Strata has strong user experience features –

- User self-service deployment of smart client and software updates (using Microsoft
Click Once);
- User workspace for function and data shortcuts (to a function or an entity instance;
e.g. enrolment, an individual student or a group of students); all functions are
also available from menus;
- Navigational user interface, where users can readily navigate the Strata business
object model; for example, Navigate from a student to a course to a class to the
students enrolled in the course, and so on;

- Integration with MS-Office: email and export of screen data to MS-Excel; for example,
a set of student assessments is exported to MS-Excel;
- Context-sensitive help;
- User-defined reporting, defined in terms of the Strata business object model ;
- Users can transiently arrange, sort, add and remove data-grid columns, from the
displayed business object (e.g. student) and related business objects (e.g. student
attendance);
- Job scheduling and notification, useful for long running processes (e.g. some reports);
- Capacity for 15 years of historical data on-line; data archiving is typically unnecessary.

Strata is built using best practice and guidance from Microsoft and leverages the
Microsoft environment and infrastructure to deliver high availability, security,
auditability and flexibility. Strata has been developed in C#, using Microsoft technologies

Avaxa offers implementation and support services for Strata, including the full
conversion and loading of historical data into the Strata database.
The Strata application is configurable via application settings to more closely
align Strata to the policies and practises of each education institute. Beyond configuration,
Strata is open to extension; Strata uses Avaxa’s Hyper Framework, which enables
rapid and efficient extension of Strata functionality.
